As of January 1st, 2010 the United States government agreed to reduce the manufacturing and consumption of refrigerant R-22 by 75%. Additional reductions will be implemented in January, 2015 (90% reduction) and the COMPLETE PHASE-OUT or manufacturing of all refrigerant R-22 by January, 2020.
What Does The HCFC Refrigerant R-22 Phase-Out Mean For Consumers?
At this time there is no law that requires any of the existing R-22 systems to be removed and replaced with the new (non-ozone depleting) R-410 refrigerant. But, what the government and manufacturers have done (because of the scarcity and reduction in producing R-22) is they’ve continually and dramatically increased the price of R-22 per pound. Over the last five years we’ve seen the cost of R-22 skyrocket by over 600%.
