When is the best time to be thinking about your heater? If you said in the middle of summer, then you would be absolutely correct. “Hang on a minute,” you might be thinking, “Why should I be thinking about my heater when it’s brutally hot and oppressively humid outside? Isn’t that the last thing I need?” You’d be correct, but here’s the thing: you’re not going to be running your heater anytime soon. And, logically, the best time to service something is when you won’t urgently need it anytime soon. Thus, the advice we give to just about every homeowner is that they should be thinking at least one season ahead when it comes to their HVAC equipment.
To explain what we mean, here is a sample calendar you can follow for how you should service and prepare your HVAC equipment in order to keep up with your needs and ensure you are comfortable all year long.
Summer
During the summer months, your air conditioner will be by far the most important part of your HVAC system, meaning the well-prepared homeowner will have already had the proper services and preparations done for it during the spring season. You’ll just have to continually monitor it throughout the season and call for help if your system experiences any sort of a problem.
However, while doing this, you should start to think ahead to the fall, meaning your air conditioner use will taper off and slowly be replaced by your heater as the weather starts to turn colder and colder. However, when you consider that the majority of heating problems occur during the first cycle of the season, you definitely want to make sure your heater is prepared before the first time you’ll need it. When better to do that than during the season where you know you won’t need your heater? It may seem surprising, but we highly recommend that all homeowners schedule their annual furnace or heat pump tune-up service during late summer or early autumn months.
Fall
Fall is the point where your air conditioner use will transition into heating, and that means you’ll already want your heater ready to go. During the early months of this season, if you haven’t scheduled a heater tune-up service yet, you’ll want to do it. Make sure this is done before your first real chill of the season, and you’ll be happy you did when your furnace or heat pump is ready to go. You’ll also want to make sure you check your air filter at the start of the autumn season—in many cases, the final days of summer can be some of the hottest, and that means you’ll be running your air conditioner perhaps even more so than you already were. That means considerable additional use on your air filter, and a ton of extra debris piling up in it. Don’t be surprised if you have to change your air filter at the start of autumn.
Winter
During winter, you’ll be in the middle of the heating season, and just like you thought about your furnace during the hottest months of the year, you’ll want to start thinking about your air conditioner while it’s cold. Was your air conditioner struggling to keep certain areas of your home cool? Are you finding that your electric bills are spiking during the summer months? Now’s the time to address these problems with a proper air conditioner inspection and tune-up service. Booking yours during the winter months both helps you avoid the rush that we frequently see during the mid-spring to early-summer months, and it helps you ensure that your air conditioner will be ready to go the moment you first need it. Thus, we usually recommend most homeowners schedule their air conditioning service during the month of February up through roughly around mid-March when the weather is still cool. That means you won’t need your air conditioner, and that means you’ll be able to maintain it before you need it again.
Spring
Finally, spring is yet another season of transition from the cold temperatures of winter to the warm ones of summer. There will likely come points in this season where you have to use both your heating and air conditioning equipment, possibly even both of them on the same day! In any case, it’s a good idea to prepare and be ready. We strongly advise having your air conditioning tune-up service completed by no later than the end of March.
Likewise, we also recommend checking and replacing your air filter during this season as well. You likely had to replace your filter during the winter months, but the end of winter can also bring about some of the coldest temperatures of the season, and thus your heater will be utilized to an even greater extent, meaning more strain on your air filter. Change it out if it’s dirty, and you’ll enjoy greater efficiency and cleaner air all spring long.
